Now that you’ve had a baby, you may be wondering when you’ll get your post-pregnancy body back. Some women are able to bounce back within months, while others require a little more time. Whether you’re thinking about undergoing an abdominoplasty, or changing your diet or exercise program, there are ways to get rid of stubborn belly fat.

Post Pregnancy Belly Fat

Lifting, Cardio and Stretching

Cardio gets your heart rate up, but on its own, it won’t result in much change to your abdominal area. Your abdominal muscles need a little push, so incorporate crunches, lunges and weight lifting into your exercise routine. If you have a newborn, you may not have enough time to exercise. However, if you start stretching on a regular basis, you will have an easier time getting rid of belly fat when you do get time to lift and do cardio.

Eat the Right Foods

Just because something is fat free doesn’t mean it’s good for you. Start reading the labels on what you’re eating and avoid processed or fast foods. Try lean proteins like salmon and chicken, and opt for leafy greens like kale, spinach or chard. Have a sweet potato if you’re craving fries, and substitute at least one cup of coffee daily with water or green tea.

Avoid Alcohol

A celebratory drink when your baby is finished breast feeding is fine, but don’t get into the habit of boozing too often. Alcohol, whether it’s beer or hard liquor, contains sugar and empty calories that make a home for themselves in your gut. For many women, giving up that glass of red wine with dinner can make all the difference in getting rid of belly fat after pregnancy.

Abdominoplasty and Liposuction

When you’ve exhausted all resources and are at your wits end, consider cosmetic surgery. Abdominoplasty is a procedure that many women undergo following pregnancy, because it removes stubborn belly fat safely, resulting in a flat, toned stomach. Liposuction can be part of the abdominoplasty surgery, or it can be done on its own, depending on the amount of belly fat that needs to be removed.

It’s important to remember that with any of the above, losing belly fat takes time. You will not wake up the day after your abdominoplasty with a flat stomach. Your body needs to heal first. You can’t give up alcohol for a week and expect to see results immediately. Give yourself at least two weeks, no matter what you decide to do to get rid of stubborn belly fat. But, when the results become visible, you’ll want to get out that bikini.
