Why You Should Get Implants In January

The beginning of the new year is the time to think about what to do during the winter months to prepare for summer. For some women, that means getting into the best shape possible and the consideration of breast implants. Breast augmentation is one of the most popular plastic surgeries. More women are opting to feel better about themselves by having the procedure done. In fact, research has shown breast implants boost both self-esteem and body image. This surgery involves inserting implants consisting of silicone shells either filled with saline or silicone gel.

For those wishing to have a bathing suit ready physique come summer, January is the perfect month to have the surgery performed. The holiday stress has dissipated and things are just getting back to ‘normal.’ Another reason January is the perfect time to have the surgery performed is it allows for ample time for healing.

What the Surgery Entails

So, after consultation with your surgeon, you’ve made the decision to get implants. It’s the day of your surgery. What will happen during the procedure? After you’ve had anesthesia, your surgeon will make an incision in one of these areas:

  • Under your arms

  • Around the nipples

  • Along the underside of your breasts

  • Or through a mastectomy scar in the case of breast reconstruction

Silicone gel filled implants will already be filled with silicone when placed. Saline filled implants may or may not be filled. If not, the silicone shell will be inserted and filled with the right amount of saline. When all is done, your incision will be closed with stitches and you may have temporary drains. Your surgeon will discuss all these issues with you prior to surgery. Now, it’s time for you to heal.

The Healing Process

There are many phases to natural healing. First, there will be inflammation and scars will be firmer and redder. This stage lasts about three months. Next, in the resolution phase, inflammation goes away and all scars fade to their baseline in about a year, however most scarring will be at the baseline in about six months, meaning scars will be minimal. So, if surgery is performed in January, by July you should have no swelling or obvious scarring.
